Our Purpose

Lilly unites caring with discovery to create medicines that make life better for people around the world.

Eli Lilly and Company was founded in 1876 by Colonel Eli Lilly, who was committed to creating high-quality medicines that met real needs. His charge to the generations of employees who have followed was this: “Take what you find here and make it better and better.”

More than 140 years later, we remain committed to his vision through every aspect of our business and the people we serve, starting with the people who take our medicines, and extending to health care professionals, employees and the communities in which we live.

Eli Lilly and Company

Globally, Eli Lilly and Company employs approximately 38,000 people and markets medicines in 120 countries. With major Research and Development facilities in eight countries and clinical research conducted in more than 55 countries, Lilly’s work continues to break new ground, placing it on the leading edge in many of today’s most important areas of health care research.

Lilly Canada

Lilly Canada was established in 1938, the result of a research collaboration with scientists at the University of Toronto, which eventually produced the world's first commercially available insulin. The company built its first facility in 1946, and today our Canadian headquarters is still located in Toronto, Ontario.

Our work focuses on oncology, diabetes, autoimmunity, neurodegeneration and pain. We employ more than 300 people across the country.

Generations of Lilly employees have sustained a culture that values excellence, integrity and respect for people. Embracing diversity and inclusion is at the core of our long-held value of respect for people. It is the lens through which we understand and respond to the unique needs of people who depend on our medicines.

A focus on diversity and inclusion is built into our workplace culture. In our recruiting and hiring, our talent-management processes, and all our policies and programs, we see direct value when our workforce is representative of the people we serve, and fully engaged. We strive for a work environment where each employee feels welcomed, respected, valued and heard, and where we benefit from each person’s diverse views and ideas.
