Environmental Sustainability

Our purpose of making life better includes protecting and preserving the world we live in.

Making medicines requires the use of valuable resources including energy, water and raw materials. We’re committed to continually reducing our environmental impact across our products’ life cycles and our supply chain.

As our product portfolio evolves, we find new and better ways to minimize our environmental footprint. This ensures that our operations are safe for our employees and the communities where we operate.

We set and measure challenging environmental goals to drive performance. To learn more about our latest environmental reporting, see Eli Lilly and Company’s 2018 Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report. Please note that this information is in English only.

Global Highlights

  • We employ green chemistry to design products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use of hazardous substances.

  • We’re transitioning 90% of our mandatory endotoxin tests from a process that relies on bleeding horseshoe crabs to one that doesn’t require harvesting live animals.

  • Through 2018, despite significant production increases, we reduced our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 12.7% (from 2012 baseline year).
